McAuliff-Shepard Mission Statement

The mission of the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center is to inspire every generation to reach for the stars. They do this through engaging and entertaining activities that explore astronomy, aviation and earth and space science.

Two Heroes Honored

Alan Bartlett Shepard was the first American in space in 1961. He was selected from a group of 500 test pilots to become one of the seven original Mercury astronauts. Shepard made space more accessible by coining the "astronaut's prayer" and being the first person to try golfing on the moon! Sharon Christa McAuliffe was one of the seven crew members of Space Shuttle Challenger mission STS-51-L. She was to be the first teacher to go into space as part of NASA’s “Teacher in Space” program. Christa was selected from 11,000 applicants and completed full astronaut training. Tragically, the Challenger exploded shortly after launch and all seven crew members were lost.
