About the Chevy Silverado & GMC Sierra
Car and Driver refers to the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 as identical twins. They’re both great trucks! Inside, they both share the same engines, transmissions, chassis and most of the same sheet metal. Outside, they look a little different. The Silverado has stacked headlights, while the Sierra has simple, classy-looking small projector-beam units. The Sierra also has unique styling on its grille, front bumpers, fenders and aluminum hood.

Engine
Under the hood you’ll find powerful engines with nearly the same capability. The Sierra’s 355-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 produces the same mellow hum as the V-8 Chevy’s engine. Both accelerate quickly, going from 0-to-60 in just 6.7 seconds.

Fuel Economy

The Sierra’s 5.3 engine switches to V-4 mode to help save fuel when on the highway. In two-wheel-drive mode, the Sierra V-8 gets 16 city mpg and 23 highway. Four-wheel-drive versions with the V-8 get 16/22 mpg. You’ll get a little better gas mileage with the V-6.

Ride

Both pickups features a comfortable ride with a smaller feel behind the wheel than their larger counterparts. The Sierra’s steering is tight and responsive. The firm sports-car-like brake pedal is a real plus and the braking distances recorded by the Sierra’s Chevrolet analog were among the best in its class.
