Tips for Driving a Truck in the Rain

Posted at Mon, Jun 13, 2016 9:00 AM

More than 600 truckers die every year in the US. Many of these deaths are due to accidents. A lot of these accidents occur during snow storms or rainstorms. Every trucker is aware that adverse weather conditions pose a lot of dangerous when you are driving. Here are some tips on how to protect yourself and your truck during a rainstorm.

Prevent hydroplaning

Hydroplaning happens when a layer of water or oil is created between the tire and the road. This causes the tire to lose traction. At this point, no inputs can control the vehicle. Considering that some eighteen wheel trucks can easily weigh up to 80,000 pounds, hydroplaning can lead to disaster.

To prevent hydroplaning when it is raining, slow down your truck, turn the headlights and tail lights to maximize visibility and leave some space between your vehicle and other vehicles.

Keep alert at all times

Don't lose sight of the road no matter how bad the visibility. If you can't see the road at all because of mist, it is better to stop the truck and wait for the mist to clear. If you look away, you may skid, crash, swerve or flip over.

Don't reach for objects on the passenger seat, back seat, dash board when you are driving in the rain. Don't talk on a phone because it reduces your reaction time. Finally, don't drink or eat when you are driving in the rain because, you may have to take a hand off the steering wheel.
