Toyota Tacoma

Finding a used truck that will still hold its value can feel like an impossible task, but Tim’s Truck Capital here in Concord, NH, is always ready for the challenge. Some of the industry’s favorite brands have cracked the code to a long-lasting legacy and successful pickup truck, which we want to share with you today. You might be surprised by which trucks hold their value best, so stay tuned.

Trucks That Continue To Hold Value Long-Term: At A Glance

Pickup trucks are notorious for avoiding the 1, 2, 3, or even 5+ year value drop that many cars and SUVs face the minute they leave the lot. Because they are designed to be more classic, plus their durability and capabilities, you might notice that a used truck stays valuable far longer than the average five- to eight-seater passenger vehicle. A couple of models that stand out nationally include the Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra, Honda Ridgeline, Nissan Frontier, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Colorado, Ford F-150, and Super Duty Series.

Below, we want to dive into the depreciation and resale values of each of these trucks and give you their expected five-year sale prices based on current national averages.

Toyota Tacoma

The Toyota Tacoma is one of the market's best-selling used vehicles, and for good reason. According to CarEdge, the Tacoma will depreciate 22% over 5 years and have a 5-year resale value of around $34,806 (national average). All things considered, you can expect over 80% of the original purchase price to hold for the first couple of years, which is unheard of for most used vehicles.

Toyota Tundra

Another used truck that holds its value incredibly well is also a Toyota, the Tundra pickup. This truck will depreciate by about 26% over 5 years and have a 5-year resale value of $43,671. This is still well below average depreciation for a used model, so a Tundra is a great choice if you want something stable for at least 5 years.

Note: The Tundra is Toyota's full-size option, and it ranks among the top ten used truck options on outlets like CarEdge.

Honda Ridgeline

Another used pickup truck you might be interested in, if value over time matters, is the Honda Ridgeline. Although slightly higher than Toyota, the Honda Ridgeline is expected to depreciate by roughly 36% after 5 years and have a 5-year resale value of $29,028. This truck will hold 70% or so of its purchase price for the first three years, with the four and five-year marks taking a bigger hit.

Nissan Frontier

The Nissan Frontier is another pickup truck that will hold value competitively over its first few years. According to CarEdge, this truck will depreciate by about 37% over 5 years and have a 5-year resale value of $26,539.

Chevrolet Silverado

When you think Chevy, you think of an all-American pickup truck, which has benefited the resale value and depreciation of this iconic vehicle. You can expect this truck to depreciate by 43% over 5 years and have a 5-year resale value of $32,973. Again, this is higher than the Toyota Tacoma and Tundra, but the Silverado retains a decent amount of value after the initial drop-off in its first year on the road.

Chevrolet Colorado

The next truck to keep an eye on for overall resale value and lower-than-average depreciation is the Chevy Colorado. With this pickup truck, you will see an average depreciation of 48% after 5 years and have a 5-year resale value of $22,629. You also want to remember that this truck holds about 80% of its value by year two, and then falls to ~65% by the third year of ownership.

Ford F-150

The Ford truck lineup is always a favorite among used-car shoppers, especially here in Concord, NH. However, depreciation for the F-150 series will be around 50% after 5 years, with a 5-year resale value of $31,302. That is not to say this is not a good short-term investment, as it retains roughly 60% or more for 4 years.

Note: The F-150 ranks in CarEdge's Top 10 models in years 3 and 5, then falls behind models like the Chevy Silverado 1500 beyond that.

Ford F-250

Entering the heavy-duty side of Ford's pickup truck offering, we have the F-250. This model is expected to depreciate by approximately 46% over 5 years and to have a 5-year resale value of $33,564. This is better than the F-150, mainly because of its better towing and general power.

Ford F-350

The Ford F-350 is another truck that holds its value well over time, with an average depreciation of 33% after 5 years, and has a 5-year resale value of $42,280. That makes it one of Ford's best-value retaining models so far, so that is something to keep in mind when shopping for a used truck. Again, better specifications and capabilities mean better perceived value by future used F-350 shoppers.

Ford F-450

The last truck on the list with below-average depreciation is the Ford F-450. This is a popular heavy-duty model from the brand as well, and is expected to depreciate by 32% after 5 years, with a 5-year resale value of $58,123. This puts it as Ford's lowest depreciating pickup, competitive with the Toyota Tundra. We also want to note that you can bet on retaining ~80-85% of its sticker price for the first three years, which cannot be said about many of the other trucks on this list.
