Jeep's Grand Cherokee is a popular choice in the US mid-size SUV segment and has been ever since the nameplate first appeared in 1993 with the launch of the first generation of this luxury SUV.
The long-running fourth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee model has been around since production kicked off in 2011 and continued until 2021 to make way for the current fifth-generation model. The fourth-generation Jeep Grand Cherokee received a facelift in 2014, with a further facelift implemented in 2017.
The refreshed 2014 model year Jeep Grand Cherokee still offers many solid purchase options for those prospective buyers looking for an affordable pre-owned luxury SUV.
Let's take a closer look at what trims and packages the 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee has to offer.
The cheapest model of the 2014 model year, the Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo offers features such as a body-color grille, daytime running lights, a rear spoiler, heated and power side mirrors, privacy glass and rear defrost and 17-inch aluminum wheels with tire pressure monitoring.
The powertrain on the base trim is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine, making 295 horsepower and 260 foot-pounds of torque paired with the standard across-range eight-speed automatic transmission, taking power to the rear wheels. Adding the option of either a Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive II AWD system was an extra cost option.
A new 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 producing 240 hp and 420 foot-pounds of torque was optional on all trims from the Limited trim and up. The Laredo offers a towing capacity of 6200 pounds.
The cabin features manually adjustable cloth seats, cruise control, power windows all around, remote keyless start and entry and an adjustable leather-wrapped steering wheel. In-car entertainment features a 5-inch Uconnect touch-screen with Bluetooth and USB port, AM/FM stereo with auxiliary audio and MP3 player. Options were a CD player, hard disc drive and satellite radio.
Occupant safety is well taken care of with all-around disc brakes with anti-skid braking and extensive airbags fitted, inclusive of drivers, passengers, front head, rear head and front side airbags. Driver safety assistance extends to brake assist, electronic stability control, child safety locks and traction Control.
Two packages were available and added features like a power liftgate, 18-inch wheels and Jeep's Selec-Terrain adjustable traction control system with the AWD models.
For 2014, a palette of 10 exterior colors was available.
Moving up in price, the Limited offered buyers two optional engines, a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 or a new 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V-6 and a two-speed transfer case with the optional four-wheel-drive system. The Limited rides on upgraded 18 inch alloy wheels.
The slightly more expensive Limited trim saw a significant jump in standard luxury appointments to the base trim. Included in the Limited trim are leather seats, heated front and rear seats with memory functions, a heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel, remote engine start, plus a 10-speaker audio system.
Two off-road equipment packages were available: firstly, a luxury package with nicer leather trim, high-intensity discharge headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, plus a dual-pane panoramic sunroof. The second electronics package added adaptive cruise control, blind spot warning, advanced brake assist, and lane departure warning.
The Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland for 2014 became the nameplate's second nicest trim level and, as such, added to the already extensive list of luxury appointments seen on the Limited trim.
On the outside of the Grand Cherokee, the night driving experience was improved over the lower trims with standard LED daytime running lamps and bi-xenon headlamps. The addition of 20-inch alloy wheels plus a moonroof rounded off the upgrades.
Cabin enhancements include the multi-adjustable seats, with a premium Nappa leather option, standard stitched leather on the dashboard and doors, a wood finish steering wheel and genuine wood trim around the cabin and the 8.4-inch touch-screen.
Color choices for the Overland mirrors those of the previous two trim levels.
Offering buyers the ultimate in luxury, the Grand Cherokee Summit comes equipped with an extensive array of standard features. On the outside, buyers get daytime running lights and mirrors with integrated turn lights and auto-leveling headlights.
Available in both 4 x2 and AWD configuration, the AWD Summit drive train features as standard the Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive system with air suspension,
The interior is a comfortable place to be for all occupants, offering standard climate control with dual aircon, leather seats with the driver's seat being cooled, both power front seats are heated with seat memory plus the heated rear seat. In-car entertainment is top class with standard HD radio with AM/FM stereo, auxiliary audio Input, MP3 player, satellite radio and premium 825-watt, 19-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
Driver aids include a navigation system, onboard hands-free communications system and wireless cell phone connection. Safety items include brake assist, electronic stability control, child safety locks, traction control, blind spot monitoring and cross-traffic alerts.
There are also a few exclusive items available only on the Summit, such as the unique Jeep brown monochrome interior color and suede-like material used on the A-pillars and the headliner.
A choice of seven exterior colors was available for buyers.
While not really a trim level, the Grand Cherokee SRT, standing for Street & Racing Technology, is a sort of separate halo model thought up by Jeep's marketing people. The SRT model continues as the perfect choice for those looking for a bit more show-and-go in their pre-owned SUV purchase.
The SRT is equipped with a 470-horsepower 6.4 L Hemi V8 engine with standard all-wheel drive, a special electronic Selec-Trac system rather than the Selec-Terrain traction control system along with Brembo brakes to make sure you can stop.
Interior treatment extends to an SRT-specific steering wheel and suede-like sport seats, plus carbon fiber replacing all wood trimming. Options for the SRT were a moonroof, the 19-speaker audio system, a trailer tow package and a rear-seat Blu-ray DVD package.
