When it comes to mid size trucks in 2015, Car and Driver likes the Toyota Tacoma, Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon. The Toyota Tacoma has a ruggedly handsome exterior and great off road gear. The 2.7 litre four-cylinder with 180 lb-ft of torque is standard, and paired with a five speed manual or six-speed automatic. There’s also a 3.5-litre V-6 option that mates with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic. When it’s properly equipped, the V6 can tow an impressive 6,800 pounds!

The Chevy Colorado is clever and capable. It’s available in three cab-and-bed configurations and offers almost as much utility as full-size pickups. A 2.5-liter inline-four with 191 lb-ft of torque is standard. You can also choose a 3.6-liter V-6 (275 lb-ft) and a 2.8-liter turbo-diesel inline-four (369 lb-ft), which has a tow rating of up to 7,700 lb. There are three transmission choices, as well as all-wheel-drive. With the trail-ready ZR2 trim, you get a unique suspension and other off-road kit.
