Advantages of a Sequential Gearbox – Part 1

Barring a few, almost every race car is equipped with a sequential gearbox rather than a standard manual transmission. This provides a number of benefits. Take a look at a few of them.

1. Shifting gears is easier: The most obvious advantage of the sequential gearbox is its usage. Unlike a manual transmission where there is a significant stop in torque transfer, the sequential gearbox does not require you to stop or slow down in order to change gears. Thus, you are able to increase or decrease your speed without stopping or experiencing a drop in speed.

2. The mechanism is uncomplicated: In an ‘H’ patterned shifter, you have to be extremely dexterous to operate the gears. To change from 2nd gear to 3rd gear you have to pull and push the shifter a couple of times, probably in different directions. In a sequential gearbox, you simply push the lever upwards or downwards and the gear will have changed. You do not have to overthink and keep the gears in mind because of the simplicity of the mechanism.

3. The gear changes occur sequentially: The mechanism is aptly named because you can change gears only in sequence. Jumping gears is impossible since you do not have direct access to each individual gear as in a manual transmission. For example, when you want to downshift from the 4th gear to the 1st, you will have to go through the 2nd gear and the 3rd gear by pulling the shifter back towards you. To upshift, you push the lever forward.
