Looking for a fun and educational thing to do with the family? At Tim’s Truck Capital And Auto Sales in Epsom NH, we like to go to the Amoskeag Fishways Learning and Visitors Center in the heart of Manchester NH. This award-winning environmental education center is on the Merrimack River. It has an impressive exhibit hall that is open all year long, with fun, interactive exhibits that help you explore the river watershed and learn about the importance of wise stewardship of our water resources.

Your kids will love viewing live turtles, frogs and salmon. They can play a salmon migration game, generate electricity and more. During the months of May and June, visitors can view migrating shad, herring and sea lamprey in the underwater viewing windows. The windows look into a 54 step fish ladder that lets migrating fish swim around the Amoskeag Dam and continue going upriver.

There are lots of cool programs available for all ages, including programs about river wildlife, ecology, electricity, hydro and solar power, urban wildlife, fish biology, survival skills, Native Americans and more.

The Dam was built in 1836 and then rebuilt in 1921 to generate electricity. In 1989, the fish ladder was successfully built. It’s comprised f 54 pools, with each one a foot higher than the preceding one. These pools act like steps, letting the fish “climb” to the top of the falls and bypass the hydro station.

At Tim’s Truck Capital, we find Amoskeag Fishways to be a fascinating place and highly recommend it. If you are looking for great used cars for sale in NH or used trucks NH, we hope you’ll come see us. Once you’ve done business with Tim’s Truck Capital, you’ll be hooked!
