The Jeep Wrangler Sahara Edition nameplate conjures up images of exotic locales while invoking this iconic Jeep's spirit of adventure. The Wrangler Sahara Edition is a special edition Jeep package first unleashed on the public in 1988. Jeep's Wrangler Sahara package features a unique set of paint colors as well as seat covers. When Jeep redesigned the Wrangler in 1987, they began offering the Wrangler Sahara as a premium trim level. However, many of the options available on the Wrangler Sahara were standard Wrangler options. The Wrangler Sahara with the square 'YJ' headlight, body-colored side trim as well as the unique styling that set it apart, was sold until the end of 1995.
In 1997, after Jeep redesigned the 'TJ' Wrangler, the company brought back the Sahara package as part of the next generation "TJ" Wrangler. That new Wrangler Sahara offered many similar trims and appointments and were embraced by Jeep Wrangler enthusiasts as an upgraded version of the original Jeep Wrangler Sahara Edition. Jeep continued to make the Wrangler Sahara until the end of the 2004 model year. In 2005, Jeep produced 1,000 or so Wrangler Unlimiteds that had the Sahara package as a tie-in to the movie called "Sahara". By the end of that year, Jeep removed the Sahara package from its lineup.
In 2007, Jeep brought back the Wrangler with the Sahara package. Its key features were light Khaki body paint and color-matched tops and wheels. It also had unique interior trim as well as special decals. Today, the Sahara package contains body-colored fender flares, upgraded sound system and power windows and 4 available powertrains from which to choose. The base model is a V-6, 3.6-liter Pentastar® engine which has engine start/stop technology to minimize fuel consumption and averages 20 miles a gallon in city and highway driving. The Wrangler Sahara Edition can also have a V-6, 3.0-liter, Turbo EcoDiesel engine, a V-6, 3.6-liter VVT eTorque engine or 2.0-liter Turbo engine. The Wrangler Sahara Edition's maximum towing capacity is 3,500 pounds.
