If you're looking to buy a diesel truck, there are a lot of options. Before you decide which truck to buy, you have to be sure you want a diesel truck in the first place. To help you make the decision, here are a few pros and cons that apply for different areas.
Fuel
Diesel vehicles are mainly renowned for their fuel economy. Studies have shown that for trucks and SUVs with diesel-powered engines, mileage increases by up to 20% per gallon. The problem is, diesel trucks are better off on open roads. If you drive in heavy traffic, the increase in mileage is barely present. To add to this, not all stations have diesel fuel pumps so make sure your tank has enough fuel before you drive long distances. Diesel rates are also higher than petrol or gas. If you want to save fuel while driving in the city, you're better off with a hybrid or electric truck.
Maintenance
Diesel engines have fewer parts and thus are relatively easy to maintain. These engines do not have spark plugs or distributors, so regular ignition tuneups are not needed. On the flip side, if you do not maintain the truck properly, there will be breakdowns that are expensive to get fixed.
We will take the debate further in the next part of the series. You can check out diesel trucks at Tim's Truck Capital.
