Car and Driver refers to the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500 as identical twins, though their exterior appearance is quite different. Inside and under the hood, they both share the same engines, transmissions and chassis. Power
Under the hood you’ll find similar powerful engines with just about the same capability. The Sierra’s 355-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 engine sounds nearly the same as the V-8 Chevy’s engine. Both engines provide quick acceleration, getting from 0-60 in just 6.7 seconds.

To save fuel on the highway, the Sierra’s 5.3 engine switches to V-4 mode. In two-wheel-drive mode, the Sierra V-8 gets an estimated 16 city mpg and 23 highway. Four-wheel-drive versions with the V-8 get 16/22 mpg. The V-6 gets slightly better gas mileage.

Ride
Both pickups feature a comfortable ride and they’re more responsive than the larger pickups. The Sierra’s steering is especially tight and responsive. You’ll feel confident with the firm sports-car-like brake pedal. The braking distances recorded by the Sierra’s Chevrolet analog were among the best in its class.

Exterior Look
The Silverado is distinguished by its stacked headlights, while the Sierra has simple, sleeker, small projector-beam units. You’ll also find individualized styling on the Sierra’s grille, front bumpers, fenders and aluminum hood.
