Twins! The 2014 Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra 1500

“Identical twins.” That’s how Car and Driver reviews compare the GM’s Sierra and Silverado pickups. They share the same engines, transmissions, chassis and most of the same sheet metal. Looking at the front-end reveals some obvious exterior differences. While the Sierra has simple, classy-looking small projector-beam units, the Silverado has a very different look with its stacked headlights. The Sierra’s grille, front bumpers, fenders and aluminum hood are also feature individualized styling.

Under the hood you’ll find similar engines which perform similarly. The Sierra’s 355-hp, 5.3-liter V-8 produces the same mellow purr as the V-8 Chevy. Both can accelerate from and 0-to-60 in just 6.7 seconds.

When on the highway, the Sierra’s 5.3 engine switches to V-4 mode to help save fuel. In two-wheel-drive mode, the Sierra V-8 returns an EPA-estimated 16 city mpg and 23 highway. Four-wheel-drive versions with the V-8 get 16/22 mpg. The V-6 option gets better gas mileage.

Both pickups have a comfortable ride and a smaller feel behind the wheel than their big-rig competitors. The Sierra’s steering is tight and responsive without needing to make constant corrections. A firm sports-car-like brake pedal inspires confidence and the braking distances recorded by the Sierra’s Chevrolet analog were among the best in its class.
