Getting Technical with the Chevy Silverado 2500HD

Chevy Silverado 2500 HD

When you choose a reliable, pre-owned Chevy Silverado truck you’re getting a heavy duty pickup built for any job you throw at it. These rugged pickups are ready for the job site and look great towing your camper into Bear Brook State Park for a weekend getaway.

Performance

An Advanced Engine

At first glance, the 2017 Silverado 2500HD looks extremely similar to the version that's been on sale for several years— until you look at the massive hood scoop sitting square on its front end. That functional hood scoop is the key to what makes the Duramax 6.6-liter V-8 Turbo-Diesel engine so powerful—it supplements the Duramax's fender-mounted air intake by sending in extra cool, dry ambient air into the engine to allow it to churn out 910 lb-ft of torque, 445 horsepower and tow over 23,250 lbs.

Chevrolet re-engineered nearly everything under the hood of the 2017 Silverado 2500 to create a 19% increase in max torque over the 2016 Silverado 2500. The cylinder heads have been updated to be stronger, while a taller engine block allows for a more robust piston design. The crankshaft has an active oil separator and larger connecting rod journals that allow for better control when you’re hauling large loads across the job site. The engine, built with a deep-skirt design, cast iron cylinder block, and cross-bolted main bearing caps, is a dependable workhorse for any hard working professional-- from landscapers to contractors. The engine also has reduced noise and vibration with acoustic rocker covers, isolated injectors, a full-length acoustic lower oil pan and a refreshed fuel system. To handle the 910 lb-ft. of torque generated by the Duramax engine, Chevy engineers chose Allison, makers of military tank parts, to build the six-speed transmission.

The induction system in the Duramax Diesel uses two air inlets — through the new hood scoop and near the fender — to handle the intake needs of this powerful engine, improve performance and help ensure foreign debris intake isn’t an issue, even in extreme weather conditions. Plus, Duramax glow plugs heat up rapidly and, together with Direct Injection, can help your Silverado HD start quickly in extreme cold temperatures. At the other end of the spectrum, the engine oil cooler, transmission cooler and turbo intercooler will give you confidence when climbing steep grades in the hottest conditions.

Chevy Silverado 2500 HDTowing, Hauling, and More

The 2017 Silverado HD has the horsepower, torque and transmission necessary to pull everything from your fishing boat to a front-end loader. It’s also equipped to give you the ability to help control and stop the heaviest trailers. The brakes and suspension system can handle towing up to 23,300 lbs or hauling a payload of 3,500 lbs. For easy control and monitoring of your trailer brakes, an integrated trailer brake controller is also available on 2500HD and standard with the 3500HD.

Of course, you need something to hook that trailer to. That’s why the Fifth-Wheel/Gooseneck Prep Package was made available on every trim and includes a hitch platform ready to accept a gooseneck ball or fifth-wheel hitch, a box-mounted trailer harness, a spray-in bedliner for added durability, and all the necessary holes for tying things down drilled and capped. That means you can haul construction materials to your next renovation or tow your full-sized camper through the New Hampshire wilderness without any concerns about where the roads will take you.

We also know many of our customers are concerned about heavy snowfall during our east coast winters. With it’s incredible torque and mechanics specifically designed for extreme weather, the Silverado 2500HD isn’t just ready to conquer winter-- it is just begging to be used as your next slow plow. It’s simple and easy to setup your Silverado with a snow plow blade to power through snow and ice.

Modern Performance Features

Modern features, like Electric Power Steering, come standard with the 2017 Silverado, offering enhanced stability on rural highways and tight control on city streets. The optional Trailering Camera System helps eliminate blind spots, enhances your ability to line up your trailer and hitch when backing up, and lets you keep your eye on important cargo, such as livestock, as you haul your trailer to your next destination.

Hill Start Assist is another innovative feature from Chevrolet. This technology detects when your vehicle is on a slope and holds the brakes momentarily or until you press the accelerator, giving you extra time to switch from the brake pedal to the accelerator without rolling backwards. On the flip side, the diesel exhaust brake system helps reduce the amount of conventional braking needed while towing or traveling downhill.

The Trailering Camera System allows you to view multiple angles of your trailer via your Silverado HD touch-screen. Chevy has also included StabiliTrak® with Trailer Sway Control to automatically detect a meandering trailer and apply both the vehicle and the trailer brakes (if properly equipped) to help bring your cargo back in line.

Chevy Silverado 2500 HDExterior

The frame is precisely tuned to help squelch vibration for a smoother ride and confident handling. The 2017 Silverado 2500HD features a roll-formed steel pickup box floor, which is stronger, more durable, and even lighter than traditional stamped-steel boxes. Chevy engineers also used patented technology to help the truck resist rust and increase rotor life.

But Chevrolet didn’t stop there, opting to update the exterior with a variety of options that make each job easier to get done. Dampened by a torsion spring, the EZ Lift & Lower tailgate is standard across three trim levels: LT, LTZ and High Country. It opens smoothly and can be closed with one hand, so you can load and unload your cargo easily. The CornerStep rear bumper with non-slip treads also makes it easy to step up and reach the cargo you’re carrying. Pocket hand grips built into the top of the side rails help you boost yourself into the bed. Four lower tie-downs come standard with each model while available upper tie-downs can be positioned in numerous locations to help secure cargo.

Last but not least, the bed rail protectors and an available factory-installed spray-in bedliner help prevent scratches and dings so your truck can work as hard as you do.

Interior

With the Silverado, Chevrolet has gone all out to create a comfortable interior with modern amenities. Resilient foam helps the seats retain their support over time, which we know is important for drivers and passengers who spend a lot of time in their trucks on long commutes or getting back and forth across work sites. With a quiet cabin, triple-sealed doors, thicked windshield glass than previous models, and sound-deadening materials the 2500HD is the perfect place to take your next work meeting without concerns of background noise. When it comes to storage space, Chevrolet has you covered. Upper and lower glove boxes give your whole crew a place to store their personal belongings while the various storage areas throughout the cab make sure everyone has a spot for all of their work and travel gear. With an available center console storage compartment designed to double as a file cabinet, Silverado HD helps keep your organized. Forward-hinged rear doors provide easy access to the rear seats. Those seats can be folded up to provide extra space for tools, camping supplies, or whatever else you want to take on the road with you.

Chevrolet also wanted to make accessing your technology options easy, regardless of where you are. The steering wheel-mounted controls allow you to activate available Bluetooth® functions on your smartphone, set the cruise control, engage the optional heated steering wheel and much more. When looking across the dashboard, it is clear the knobs and buttons have purposefully been designed to be large enough to accommodate gloved hands. All of these options come together to create a modern interior to one of the most rugged heavy duty trucks on the market.

Safety Features

We’re happy to report that Chevrolet incorporated a ton of different standard and optional safety features in the 2017 Silverado lineup, including:

  • Safety Warnings from Your Seat: One of the most exciting is a smart drivers seat that uses directional vibration pulses from the seat cushion instead of audible crash avoidance alerts to help indicate the direction of potential threats. This Chevrolet patented warning approach is also tied into the other onboard crash avoidance systems.
  • Lane Departure Warning: If you unintentionally change lanes (without using a turn signal), an available camera-based system will send you an alert to correct your position. The camera, mounted near the inside rearview mirror, reads traffic lane markings when identifiable and provides both audible and visual alerts to keep you safe.
  • ABS Brakes: Four-wheel, four-channel, antilock disc brakes (ABS) help provide straight, more controlled stops by preventing wheel lockup in most road conditions.
  • Automatic Crash Response with OnStar: In the event of a crash, built-in sensors can alert a specially trained OnStar Advisor to see if you need help — even if you can’t ask for it. OnStar advisors can use GPS technology to pinpoint your location and request emergency help when you need it most.
  • Forward Collision Alert: This available feature continually monitors how close your vehicle is to the vehicle in front of you. If the system determines that a front-end collision with a detected vehicle is imminent, it alerts the driver to a potential crash. It also warns the driver if they are following another vehicle too closely.
  • Front and Rear Park Assist: This optional system senses stationary objects while you are parking and alerts you if an object starts to get too close to your truck. The available rear vision camera automatically displays a live image of the area behind the vehicle on the screen in your dashboard after you shift into reverse.
  • Rear Vision Camera: When the transmission is in reverse, the available rear camera allows the driver to view objects directly behind the vehicle and helps ease them into a parking spot with dynamic guiding lines-- making it easier to back up, park or hook up a trailer.
