Our article takes a look at two US truck favorites, the Chevy Silverado 1500 and the Ford F-250.
Pickup trucks are not just for heavy duty work like hauling building materials or livestock feed; they also double up as practical everyday commuters for many of their owners.
Shopping around for a good pre-owned example may seem simple enough but there's no denying there's just too much choice out there.
With truck owners trading in when hankering after the newest versions of their pickups, there will always be a selection of quality, low mileage pre-owned examples around.
We take a look at the last generations of these two good 'ol American favorites and share some more on what makes them solid purchase choices.
First seen in 1999, the Chevrolet Silverado is manufactured by GM under the Chevrolet brand. The Silverado is offered as a range of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks.
The Chevy 1500 is now in its fourth generation, and it was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The blue oval's F-250 pickup truck is from Ford's F-Series Super Duty series of heavy-duty trucks produced in 1999.
The F-250 sits above the more consumer-oriented F-150 and is its own dedicated super duty variant. It features heavier-duty chassis components such as fortified drive shafts, axles, brakes, towing hardware, and a 4WD transfer case that allows for heavier payloads and towing capabilities.
The F-250 is now being produced in its fifth generation, introduced in 2022.
The Silverado was fully redesigned for the 2014 model year and is available in ten trim levels with plentiful style options across all trims to suit buyers' needs.
The 2018 to 2022 Ford F-250 trim levels are the XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch, and Platinum.
The Silverado 1500 is constructed on a fully boxed high-strength steel frame with hydroforming technology. The 1500's cab's frame is also built with high strength steel and uses aluminum for weight savings plus the Silverados load bed is made of roll-formed steel instead of stamped steel to save weight and enhance the load bed's strength.
The Chevy Silverados exterior features a high sitting broad grille, which varies by trim level, with Chevy's characteristic square-cut, large wheel openings and equally large flared fenders. A roof-mounted satellite antenna is fitted.
At the rear a handy step is cut into the corner of the bumper and cargo loading ease is assisted by a low-effort lift and drop for the locking tailgate. Convenient LED under-rail lighting and tie-down points are found near the top and bottom of the load bed.
The Ford F-250 is available with a two-door Regular Cab, four-door SuperCab, or four-door Crew Cab. The Ford uses a chassis frame made from 95% high-strength steel with the body made from 6000 series aluminum alloy, which just happens to be advertised as a high-strength military grade aluminum alloy which is great news for buyers of this truck.
Exterior highlights include, auto on/off reflector halogen daytime running lights, black front bumper with a black rub strip, fascia accent and 2 tow hooks, black manual side mirrors with manual folding and at the rear a black rear step bumper and cargo lamp with a high mount stop light.
The Chevy has three gasoline engines on offer, a 4.3L EcoTec3 V6, a 5.3L EcoTec3 V8, and a 6.2L EcoTec3 V8.
All the engine options are coupled with a revised version of GM's six-speed automatic, and the 4.3 and 5.3 engines are flex-fuel capable.
Rear wheel drive or all-wheel drive options are across the lineup.
The last generation of F-250 is fitted with a 6.2 liter V8 making 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, or a 6.7-liter turbo diesel V8 producing 450 horsepower and 935 pound-feet of torque is also available.
Both engines are fitted exclusively with a six-speed automatic transmission, rear-wheel drive, or available all-wheel drive.
This generation of F-250s offers a maximum towing capacity of up to 17,600 lbs.
The Chevy seats up to six passengers, and interior features include the likes of:
Further features include a Driver Information Center with a 3.5-inch diagonal monochromatic display that provides warning messages and basic vehicle information, plus standard electronic Cruise control and steering wheel-mounted controls.
