Jeep Renegade

Jeep’s lineup is full of off-road capable vehicles, and the Jeep Renegade is certainly no exception. The Renegade is a newer addition to Jeep’s lineup, and since then they’ve remained an extremely popular option.

But what can you expect if you decide to get a Jeep Renegade, and how have these vehicles changed since Jeep first started pushing them off the assembly line in 2014? We’ll break all that down for you here, that way you can decide if a Jeep Renegade is the perfect vehicle for you!

The Introduction of the Jeep Renegade

The Jeep Renegade is a subcompact crossover SUV that first hit its lineup in 2014. As a subcompact SUV, it’s also the smallest vehicle in the Jeep lineup, giving you another option if you don’t need a larger vehicle.

Every Renegade comes standard with front-wheel drive but like with most Jeeps there’s a four-wheel drive option available if you want it. While the Renegade isn’t the direct successor to the Patriot, Jeep did discontinue that Patriot model in 2017.

The Renegade is also Jeep’s first vehicle that they produce exclusively outside of North America, with production facilities in both Italy and China. There’s a ton to love about the Renegade, but no matter how you want to look at it, it’s one of their lower-end vehicle models.

The 2019 Jeep Renegade Facelift

While technically there’s still only one generation of Renegade on the market, Jeep made so many changes to the 2019 model that some people consider it an unofficial second generation. Jeep started by making some aesthetic changes for the 2019 model year, redesigning the front and rear bumpers, adding new LED headlamps, and expanding the front grille.

But Jeep did more than just change the appearance for the 2019 model year. Other changes included an upgraded infotainment screen, taking the screen size from 7” to 8.4”, and every display is multitouch for easy navigation.

And perhaps most importantly to people wanting to listen to their tunes while driving down the road, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto made their debut in the Renegade in the 2019 model year. While every Jeep Renegade is a joy to drive, it’s the 2019 models that feature many of the modern technologies some people want in their vehicles.

Jeep also started to introduce some new engines around this time, including their first hybrid engine option for the Renegade and a 1.3L turbocharged four-cylinder engine without any hybrid features.

2022 & 2023 Jeep Renegade Changes

While Jeep made some of their first major changes to the Renegade in 2019, they continued to make adjustments and changes for the 2022 and 2023 model years. 2022 introduced the Red Edition Renegade for the first time, and some trim levels started to get 19” wheels.

Another massive change with the 2022 model year has nothing to do with what they added, but with what they took away. Starting with the 2022 model year the 2.4L engine that had been on every model year Renegade was shown the door.

Meanwhile, in 2023 Jeep ditched the front-wheel drive system altogether, making all-wheel drive the standard drivetrain for every Jeep Renegade. Not only that, but they ditched the Sport trim entirely for the 2023 model year.

While it’ll still take a bit for a 2023 model year to hit the used car market, they’re some exciting new features to look forward to that you should know about.

Jeep Renegade Engine Options

While the Jeep Renegade is a newer vehicle that’s only been on the market for about ten years, that hasn’t stopped them from putting a ton of different engine options underneath the hood. Below we’ve highlighted every engine configuration you can find under the hood of a Jeep Renegade in North America.

Not only did we highlight all ten engine options, but we’ve also given you a quick rundown of what model years you can find each engine option in and some quick performance specs on each one!

Cargo Space, Ground Clearance, and Towing Capacity

If you’re looking into a Jeep vehicle there’s a good chance you want to get off the pavement every once in a while. And if that’s something you want to do you’ll want to know just how much gear you can bring, how much space you have, and if you can tow anything behind you!

The ground clearance all depends on what Renegade you go with. For front-wheel drive options, it sits just 6.7” off the ground, but if you go with an all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive option it sits between 7.9” and 8.7” off the ground depending on the model year.

Meanwhile, the available cargo space in a Renegade stays a bit more consistent regardless of the model you decide to go with. If you’re only counting the space behind the second-row seats there’s 18.5 cubic feet of storage, but if you fold down the second row it opens up 50.8 cubic feet of storage space. These storage space numbers don’t change from year to year.

The same is true for the maximum towing capacity for a Jeep Renegade. While you’ll need to properly equip any Renegade to tow anything, regardless of the model year you go with it can tow up to 2,000 pounds.

You’re not going to tow a heavy trailer with a Renegade, but if you’re looking to haul some smaller camping equipment or something similar it’s powerful enough to get the job done. The towing capacity specifications for a Renegade don’t change with the model year, and they don’t change with the engine option you go with either.

Other Noteworthy Jeep Renegade Features

Like with most Jeep vehicles there are tons of options and packages to choose from with the Jeep Renegade, which can make it challenging to highlight everything you can find in one in just one article. Still, we’ve decided to highlight some of the most noteworthy features for you here.

iPod/USB and 3.5-millimeter auxiliary audio jacks are available in some models of the Renegade, you can find a nine-speaker premium sound system, power front bucket seats, a retractable roof panel system, heated front seats, and so much more.

However, it’s worth noting that all these features are optional upgrades depending on the model year, so you’ll want to look into what packages the Jeep Renegade you’re looking at has before assuming that it will have any of these features.

But if any of these features are deal breakers for you, there’s a Jeep Renegade out there that has what you need!

Jeep Renegade Sales Numbers

The Jeep Renegade has some up-and-down sales numbers from year to year, topping out with more than 106,000 units sold in 2016, but dipping all the way down to just 27,549 Renegades sold in North America in 2022.

While a large portion of the sales number declines coming from supply issues that limited production, the Renegade was noticing slight dips in sales numbers from year to year, and it hasn’t seen a rise in year-on-year sales numbers since 2016.

However, with tons of new features and changes and improved supply lines in 2023, we expect the numbers to rise some.

But even with sagging sales numbers, there are still plenty of Jeep Renegades on the road today. In fact, since its first full year of production in 2015 Jeep has sold more than 580 thousand Renegades. If you’re looking to get behind the wheel of your own Renegade, there’s plenty out there for you to choose from!

The Future of the Jeep Renegade

While you might be worried about the future of the Jeep Renegade because of declining sales numbers, currently Jeep seems to be going the other way with things, trying to refresh the Renegade and make it more appealing to new consumers.

While we don’t know for sure, we feel like the Renegade has a strong future ahead of it. That’s good news for most of us, because the Renegade is a pretty great vehicle and we don’t want to see it disappear from Jeep’s lineup!
